October Tide: Rain without end

October Tide was the death/doom metal side project created by members of Katatonia. The band disbanded after two releases due to lack of monetary gain from this endeavor. The band’s music more or less picks up where Katatonia’s ‘Brave Murder Day’ left off, adding more instrumentation and being less repetitive overall. Yes, I just copied and pasted that from Wikipedia. Fuck you.
Anyway, since October Tide disbanded years ago, why are we getting this to review it? Well, it just so happens that the record label is re-releasing it, remastered by the God among men Dan Swanö and with a new cover and everything. Isn’t that sweet? I think it’s sweet.
But none of that would matter if the CD isn’t worth it, right? Wrong, because this album actually is really worth it, the doom metal performed here is true old school style, and you can’t really go wrong with and Jonas Renkse and Fredrik Norrman at the helm. Another reason to get this is the legendary case of it being the last album Renkse ever sang full-on harsh vocals on. After that, we went on to smoother, gayer things. Hey, I’m not complaining, I love Katatonia, especially their most recent stuff. Still, it’s a little slab of history.
So if you miss the days of old Katatonia, or simply a time when doom metal wasn’t actually gothic rock deluxe, get yourself into gear and buy this. The song writing is majestic and the performances are all great. It has the grit of old doom metal, yet it’s never boring or stagnant, quite the contrary, all the songs are pulsating and full of melodic life.
Oh, and before I forget, the remastering by Swanö has done wonders. Mega props for my boy. Foshizzle.
The cover: Well, the original one wasn’t bad, but this is much better. Vic Records has officially become my favorite label (that sends us shit, anyway). Keep ‘em coming, lads.
